Rates, and the cold-weather catch

The Minnesota LTAP homeowner guide uses about one pound of salt per 250 square feet as a reference for a cleared surface, with the product label taking precedence. Deicer effectiveness depends on pavement temperature, not air temperature; use a current pavement reading and the product's stated temperature range. A climate normal cannot tell you today's pavement temperature or whether a product is appropriate.

How much ice melt do I need for my driveway?
The calculator uses about 1 lb per 250 sq ft (4 lb per 1,000 sq ft) as a single planning reference from the Minnesota LTAP homeowner guide for a cleared surface. It does not determine a safe rate for every product, condition, or surface. Follow the label, start with the least needed, and reassess.
Why does the page warn about cold weather?
Check pavement temperature, not just the air. Deicer products have different temperature limits and instructions; use the label for the pavement temperature and surface. When a product is outside its stated range, use traction grit or mechanical clearing instead.
Should I salt the whole driveway?
Treat only the pavement you need to clear. Remove snow first, apply according to the product label, and sweep up excess once conditions allow.
What if I already know the total square footage?
Use the known-area field. When that field has a value, it overrides the length, width, walk, and step fields.
Why does a small job still show one bag?
The bag count rounds up to whole 20 kg bags for buying. The per-spread weight is the better number for actually filling the spreader.
